Addiction Treatment Isn’t One Size Fits All
Jun 10, 2025

By Dr. Bill Ruby, CleanSlate Chief Medical Officer
At CleanSlate Outpatient Recovery Centers, our secret to success isn’t a secret. It’s simple. We care for our patients.
I know. I know. We’re supposed to post about this one crazy hack that helps you get from 20% to 100% in half the time, but that’s not what we do and that’s not how addiction treatment works.
Every patient is different and has different needs, which is why we’ve always emphasized the importance of in-person care. It allows us to get to know our patients and helps us support them as they go through the crucial early stages of recovery, when they need monitoring, accountability, and community to lower the odds of relapse.
From there, we adjust our treatment as our patients’ needs change. And that’s why I’m excited to announce a new treatment offering that we’re launching today.

Telehealth for Patients in Advanced Recovery
As patients progress in their recoveries, the patient’s focus gradually shifts away from spending time at the recovery center and towards spending time out in the world, rebuilding their lives. As patients deepen those healthy connections to family, work, and community, it’s our job as treatment providers to support them in that important foundational work. The last thing we want to do is pull them away from it.
So, for patients who have reached that stage in their recovery, and whom our providers determine are ready (based on key factors like a consistent track record of appointment attendance and demonstrated behavioral stability) we will start offering the option of continuing treatment via telehealth.
Grounded in Compassion. Supported by Data.
While telehealth is a new offering for CleanSlate, it is entirely consistent with our treatment philosophy. We approach each patient with compassion and support them fully as they work to rebuild their lives.
At CleanSlate, we’ve always offered more than just a prescription to reduce cravings and curb withdrawal symptoms. We work to resolve the root causes of addiction and we set our patients on a path for success in their lives after treatment. We provide behavioral health counseling, care coordination, infectious disease treatment and prevention, and Medicaid enrollment support.
And central to all of those areas of treatment is our guiding philosophy that we treat our patients as people deserving of dignity, respect, and community.
Based on our hypothesis that allowing patients in advanced recovery the option to continue their treatment over telehealth would support our patients as they worked to reintegrate themselves into work and family life, we conducted a three-month pilot program across our centers in two of the seven states we serve. I am very proud to report that those patients who opted for telehealth matched or exceeded our benchmarks for recovery.
No Change for New Patients
Telehealth isn’t right for everybody, and it definitely isn’t right for new patients who are just beginning their recovery. Recovery starts with connection, and that means spending in-person time with people who care about you, not by sitting alone looking at a screen. So CleanSlate’s newest patients will begin their treatment with us in person so we can support them fully as they go through the crucial first steps of recovery.
While there’s no set amount of time a patient must be in treatment with CleanSlate before they are eligible for Telehealth for Patients in Advanced Recovery, we can conservatively estimate a minimum of 6 months. That’s because, before we offer the option of telehealth, a patient must have established a consistent track record of appointment attendance and demonstrated sufficient behavioral stability that our providers feel confident the patient no longer requires the monitoring and accountability of frequent in-person visits.
