National Addiction Treatment Week 2023: Treat Addiction, Save Lives
Oct 13, 2023

Launched by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 2017, National Addiction Treatment Week is an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the need for and benefits of evidence-based addiction treatment. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between those affected by substance use disorders, such as opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder, and the essential treatments that can transform their lives.
Every year millions of individuals, families and communities grapple with the devastating effects of addiction. Since 2021, fentanyl has become the number one cause of death for Americans aged 18-45, with a heartbreaking average of one overdose death every five minutes. Alcohol-related deaths also saw a staggering increase of 25% in 2020 when compared to 2019, while only 10% of individuals battling alcohol use disorder are receiving the treatment they need.
In the face of these challenges, CleanSlate remains unwavering in its commitment to the core mission of National Addiction Treatment Week.

The Fundamental Focus of National Addiction Treatment Week
For many, understanding addiction remains a challenge. Addiction is a complex condition, with deep-rooted causes and effects. By observing National Addiction Treatment Week, we’re taking crucial steps toward:
- Recognizing Addiction as a Chronic Disease. Just as we view diabetes or hypertension, addiction must be understood as a chronic disease. It’s not a sign of weakness or a result of moral failing. Rather, it’s a condition that affects the brain and behavior, requiring comprehensive treatment and understanding.
- Highlighting That Addiction Is Treatable. Addiction might be a lifelong struggle for some, but it is treatable. With the right interventions, therapies and support systems, individuals can manage their addiction and lead fulfilling lives.
- Promoting Evidence-Based Treatment. Science-backed treatments offer a lifeline to those struggling.
- Sharing Stories. Hearing about real-life struggles and triumphs can be a source of inspiration and hope for many. They vividly illustrate strength of spirit and the difference treatment can make.
- Challenging Stigma. One of the most significant barriers to treatment is the societal stigma surrounding addiction. Misconceptions and judgments can deter individuals from seeking the help they need. By educating the public and fostering understanding, we can create a society where seeking treatment is encouraged, not shamed.
- Recognizing the Reality of Recovery. Recovery isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a transformative process that countless individuals undergo every day. Through a combination of integrative care and personal perseverance, many have turned their lives around—proving that recovery is not only possible but real.
