Making Strides Against Opioid Addiction in Warren County, Kentucky
Sep 9, 2019
The opioid crisis continues to hit hard in the Bluegrass state. In 2017, Kentucky outpaced the national average rate of opioid-involved deaths by almost double. That same year, drug overdose deaths caused by synthetic opioids increased more than tenfold climbing from 76 to 780 in just a four-year period. Most recently, a 2019 study ranked the state fifth for most overdose deaths per capita.
We’ve seen some progress statewide with the expansion of syringe exchange programs, but there is still room for improvement, particularly in western Kentucky, said Joni Furlong, center manager at CleanSlate’s Bowling Green addiction treatment center. Only seven counties west of Louisville have fully operational exchange programs.
Warren County, in particular, suffers from a lack of resources for drug rehab and medication-assisted treatment, even though it has been demonstrated as a safe and effective method for treating opioid dependence by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

We need to do a better job of educating people suffering from addiction about all the options available to them, said Cory McConnell, director of business development for CleanSlate. Not all addiction journeys are the same. What works for one person in terms of a recovery plan might not be the best option for another. What we have learned from talking with our patients is often they say they wish they had known about medication-assisted treatment sooner.
CleanSlate accepts Medicaid and offers an affordable self-pay solution to cover drug rehab with medication-assisted treatments such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) and naltrexone (Vivitrol), along with other behavioral health services, as needed.
