CleanSlate Targets Area Where Non-Fatal Overdoses are Highest in Milwaukee County for Its Fifth Addiction Treatment Center in Wisconsin
Dec 13, 2018
Greenfield, WI – With the launch of its new center for medication-assisted treatment in Greenfield, CleanSlate Centers, a national leader in addiction medicine, continues to bring desperately needed treatment for opioid and alcohol addictions to the state of Wisconsin. Located at 4848 S. 76th Street, Suite 210, close to the surrounding communities of Greendale, Hales Corners, West Allis and Franklin, CleanSlate’s new outpatient center opens its doors to patients on December 12th.
This marks CleanSlate’s fifth center in Wisconsin and its third center in Milwaukee County, which also include CleanSlate centers in Milwaukee and Glendale. The company opened the center in Southwestern Milwaukee County to increase access to care for local patients who were driving long distances to receive treatment at other CleanSlate centers.

“The rate of opioid overdose deaths in Milwaukee County is more than double the rate for the state of Wisconsin,” said Ned Pucek, Western Divisional President of Operations for CleanSlate. “With more convenient access to high-quality, affordable treatment, the people of Southwestern Milwaukee County will have a better chance of achieving and maintaining recovery. CleanSlate is eager to bring our evidenced-based care model to this area so that we can save lives and give hope to patients and their families.”
New center is located at ground zero of Milwaukee County’s opioid epidemic
The Greenfield center is located directly in the heart of the area which has been identified as having the highest rate of non-fatal overdoses in Milwaukee County. A recent report by the Milwaukee Community Opioid Prevention Effort (Milwaukee COPE) found that the opioid crisis in Milwaukee County continues to worsen, with opioid related deaths more than doubling in Milwaukee from 2012 to 2017. For every death last year, there were approximately five people in Milwaukee who experienced an overdose but survived.
The skyrocketing rates of overdoses across Milwaukee – with heroin-related deaths up 495% since 2005 – has galvanized urgent grassroots responses. Last year, the City-County Heroin Opioid and Cocaine Task Force was launched to combat the epidemic. Led by city, county and state leaders, the group’s objectives include strengthening treatment for those who suffer from addiction and providing training for the overdose-reversal drug Narcan.
As with every community it enters, CleanSlate employees have been reaching out to local stakeholders and experts to better understand how the company can support existing efforts within the Greenfield community.
“The focus on the crisis here is intense and collaborative, and that is an encouraging sign,” said Katrina Jenkins, Center Manager for CleanSlate Greenfield. She recently attended a listening session for the task force, which was organized to gather public opinion and decide next steps. “The meeting was standing room only and lasted for five hours. Afterwards, one of the committee members came up to me and thanked CleanSlate for opening a clinic right in the middle of the zone where non-fatal overdoses are highest in the county. People are grateful that we’re bringing responsible medication-assisted treatment to this area, where there is such an overwhelming need for our services.”
A model of successful care
CleanSlate has treated more than 35,000 patients over the past decade, with 11,000 patients currently being treated across the country. The company’s program of care includes appropriate medication-assisted treatment (MAT) prescribed by licensed medical providers, as well as clear accountability, supportive counseling, and care coordination. CleanSlate is actively growing its footprint to expand much-needed access to outpatient medication treatment for addiction, with 52 centers across ten states and Washington, D.C. currently in operation and many more in the process of being opened.
Wisconsin has been one state where CleanSlate continues to open more centers to meet the ever-growing demand for its services. A 2015 report by The Wisconsin Department of Health Services found that opioid addiction rates soared nearly 500 percent over the previous seven years, and four out five people in Wisconsin who become addicted to heroin started by abusing prescription painkillers. A stigma against medication assisted treatment has further exacerbated the problem. According to the Center for Disease Control, doctors in Wisconsin write about seven prescriptions for opioid pain relievers for every ten adult residents.
Although non-fatal overdoses are increasing in Milwaukee County, the COPE report found a 32% increase from 2016 in individuals who sought treatment for substance abuse.
“We hope that CleanSlate can help the people of the Southwestern communities of Milwaukee County go beyond surviving overdoses and into long-term recovery,” said Regina A. Capelli-Scheidt, M.D., CleanSlate’s Medical Director in Greenfield. “Our medical and care coordination services can give people the kind of treatment they need to overcome the disease of addiction. As someone who has grown up and is raising a family in this area, I consider it an honor to be a part of Milwaukee County’s united effort to combat this epidemic.”
