In the “Addiction Treatment Desert” of Richmond, Indiana, CleanSlate Lights Hope with New Outpatient Center
Jun 19, 2019
What do you do when you’re struggling with an addiction but most high-quality, affordable treatment providers are 80 miles away?
Long distances create overwhelming barriers to recovery, making treatment all but impossible for most people. For people who live in a “treatment desert,” the lack of hope for recovery breeds more addiction and further despair.
Such has been the case in Richmond, Indiana, which offers few treatment options to residents. CleanSlate has tipped this grim equation with a new outpatient medication-assisted treatment (MAT) center in Richmond, located at 2302 Chester Blvd., Suite A.
“Addiction doesn’t have a one-size fits all solution,” said Anthony Belott, Chief Development Officer of CleanSlate. “Patients deserve a range of affordable treatment options that are delivered with the most scrupulous quality of care. We’re anxious to bring CleanSlate’s proven model of life-saving treatment to Richmond and work closely with community partners to help patients reclaim their lives.”
“Only one week since opening our doors here, CleanSlate is already seeing 18 patients,” said Joan Erwin, Senior Vice President of Business Development at CleanSlate. “We’re grateful that CleanSlate is being well-received by Richmond, and we look forward to supporting this community’s battle against the disease of addiction.”

Community leaders with innovative responses
Wayne County ranks 11th of the 92 Indiana counties in overdose deaths. The city of Richmond, Wayne’s county seat, continues to feel the effects of the high overdose death rate in Wayne County, currently standing at 67 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is more than three times the national average of 21.6.
While Richmond and Wayne County are somewhat rural, they are located along interstate 70 roughly halfway between Indianapolis (see Types of Addiction Treatment in Indianapolis) and Dayton, OH, two areas hard hit by the opioid epidemic.
In response to the increasing overdose rate in the county, Reid Health and other community agencies have come together and formed Drugfree Wayne County. The intention is to establish an environment which fosters a healthy, drug-free and substance-free lifestyle.
In addition, the County Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a Drug Diversion Program, which gives first-time offenders the opportunity to engage in substance use disorder treatment rather than going to prison.
Belden, a local manufacturer, designed the Belden’s Pathways Program to be primarily a second chance employer. Belden’s Pathways Program has received national accolades and attention from the Surgeon General and the White House.
“One of our core values at CleanSlate revolves around collaboration,” said Erwin. “We like to say that ‘Together, we succeed,’ and the stage is set for a lot of collaboration and success in Richmond. The local engagement here is inspiring, and will significantly help us treat patients along a path of recovery.”
